Islands and Outports
| New Landscapes of Newfoundland |
Exhibition opens Wednesday November 10th
- Continues until Saturday November 27th, 2004 |
Opening reception & Sale: Wed. Nov. 10th, 5 - 7 pm |
Newfoundland outports have beautiful views of water and boats and fish stages. Each one is a kind of Venice of the North Atlantic. I sketched and made journal notes this past June while on an artist's residency.
On my return I searched for appropriate ways to arrive at beautiful paintings while also recognizing that 75% of the world's fisheries are collapsing. In Newfoundland there are many unused boats and fish stages, and tourism is now a part of the changing economy. I cannot leave out the social and environmental challenges that lie behind contemporary landscapes. Visioning from above, through the eyes of Icarus (a mythic theme for me), I arrived at a variety of paintings with sunlit colour, images below the watery moving surfaces, and still life picnics on the fish stages.
