Philippa Hunter - Mixed Imagery

Reception: 5:00p.m - 7:00p.m. |
I begin a painting by pasting torn bits of paper at random on masonite or canvas until the shapes suggest forms to be developed with my imagination into a cohesive composition. I like to introduce collage into my works because I feel that it offers an effect which cannot be achieved by other methods. This technique can lead to varying imagery, ranging from somewhat abstract to more representational.

Geoffrey Armstrong - Impressions

Reception: 5:00p.m - 7:00p.m. |
The line defines the space. A vertical line gives us an above and below, a horizontal one, a left side and a right. We seem compelled to define abstraction, to impose our own narratives on it. One man’s horizon is another woman’s cliff. They are both right. They are both wrong. The magic of abstraction derives from its ability to incite competing narratives.
The thing apprehended is not the same as thing seen. I can recall the precise spot outside Santorini where a whitewashed house met an infinite sky and the blue Aegean beyond.
I could have painted that picture but I did not. Or did I? Perhaps the sensation of a place tells us more than mere realism, offering a more inclusive definition of its spirit for those willing, not just to see, but to see beyond?
I’m looking out a window. I am in Greece, in the Haida nation on the Queen Charlotte Islands, and walking the shores of Georgian Bay. It’s a continuous journey with no itinerary. Time seems to stop as the land slowly reveals itself and I pick up my brush to capture its mood. But I do not draw the line; the line draws me, enveloping me like a mist. Wandering deeper into the haze of abstraction it occurs to me I’m not painting pictures, I’m having a conversation.
I invite you to join in.

Alan Stein - Into the night
|
| Into the Night |
|
Saturday, October 29, 2005
- Saturday, November 12, 2005 |
|
Saturday, October 29, 2005 10am-5pm |
In this exhibit Into The Night, I explore both the city at night and the night skies over Georgian Bay.
The images of Georgian Bay capture the raw elemental boldness of the Canadian North. The organic feel of the drawings go beyond what is simply there and explore what landscape has always been, an expression of spirit. There is a sort of magical element floating in the night sky. The surprise of a shooting star, the ethereal northern lights, or the full moon trailing it’s reflection across the surface of the water. The freedom in the artwork evokes the strong emotions we all feel in the face of untouched beauty. There is movement and music in these images.
In counterpoint to the scenes of the Canadian North are a series of nocturnes of New York City, Toronto and Prague. City skylines, bridges and city centres lit by floodlights and neon. I feel the same universal spirit pervades the disparate places in the world if you look for it. By choosing night time I deliberately heighten the underlying spiritual and mystical qualities of both landscape and cityscape and they can be seen not only for their formal quality but also for their magic, dream like images and as such transport the viewer into an imagined world.

Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour
|
| 80th Anniversary Exhibition |
|
Show Begins Wednesday June 15th
- Continues until July 15th |
|
Opening Reception and Sale: Wed June 15th, 5-7 pm |
Roberts Gallery is pleased to be presenting this juried exhibition celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour / La Société Canadienne de Peintres en Aquarelle. We have always felt a strong affiliation with the Society as a number of our gallery artists have been members of this fine organization and we offer our congratulations on their 80th anniversary.
The premise for establishing a society devoted to the water colour medium was simple. As set out at the inaugural meeting : “Form a society for the practice and encouragement of the painting in water colour”. This tradition continues today. As stated by a past president of the society, “The present Canadian water colour art reveals many styles of expression and different directions of development. This is an exciting time for painters in water colour and the new generation marches on vigorously.”
In addition to the over 70 selected paintings from the contemporary membership, we will display works by past members including: A.J. Casson, Carl Schaefer, Franklin Carmichael and Will Ogilvie. |
