30th Annual Sketches Exhibition
Exhibition runs from June 6th to June 28th
Reception: Saturday June 8, 2024
11:00 am – 1:00 pm
This year marks the 30th anniversary of our Sketches exhibition. It was originally started to fill a gap in our exhibition schedule and has grown into our annual showcase of historical Canadian art. Although we sometimes stray away from the classical definition of “sketch,” being an on-the-spot work of art, this year’s offering has some unique and wonderful examples of the typical sketch trip pieces including a rare Tom Thomson from Smoke Lake, an early A. J. Casson from the Haliburton area, and two watercolours by Franklin Carmichael.
Along with this varied collection of historical work dating from 1869 to 1988, we are pleased to put the spotlight on contemporary artist, Kelvin Smith, who does his own travelling, hiking, and camping through Ontario to produce his plein air oil panels. Smith has been represented by Roberts Gallery for over 20 years and his beautiful and rich panels of some of the province’s most stunning landscapes are a treat to include in this year’s special anniversary show.
