Cow Palace by Brandon Steen

Artist Brandon Steen explores the concept of anticipation and new beginnings with his striking painting ‘Cow Palace’. Striking in both size 76” x 47.75” and composition. Brandon has captured the formidable 101 year old, red barn known as the Cow Palace situated in the quaint village of Warkworth, Ontario nestled in the rolling hills of eastern Northumberland, Ontario.

Artist Brandon Steen paints meticulously, highly detailed landscapes on birch and maple wood panels. Drawn not to just the mundane, his interest lies in the beauty within it. A humble landscape painter his paintings subject always speaks to him and is caught with his keen eye. Steen’s interest is founded in structures, its relationships to its surroundings and the visible evidence of the structure having stood witness to time unfold around it.

With Brandon’s art, his protagonists are never human. In this painting his bull terrier and muse Dolores waits for what lies beyond the enormous barn doors. Not alone, she is accompanied with nine crows.  Crows gathered represent change and are a favourite of the artist. Their rendering in this painting represents the personal change afoot for the Brandon Steen having recently relocated from Toronto to the quiet of the eastern Northumberland Hills.

COW PALACE will be featured in Booth A50 with Roberts Gallery at Art Toronto 2024.
