About the Artist

An Isle-aux-Coudres native, Jimmy Perron is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist, recognized for his sensible and subtle landscapes. Raised in the picturesque town of Charlevoix, he developed his artistic style among some of the most impressive and recognizable landscapes in Quebec. Recently, Perron’s artistic ability has evolved to performance and installation art. For his involvement in the 29th International Symposium of Contemporary Art in Baie-St-Paul, Perron created a sculptural landscape in which animal and plant-life interact together. Part of this sculptural narrative was purchased by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Baie-St-Paul. Perron has been working as an artist for over 15 years, and is currently exhibited at galleries in Quebec, Ottawa, Toronto, Isle-aux-Coudres as well as Baie-St-Paul.

Large brush strokes, long sweeps of the palette knife, accumulation; Perron uses his media to its full capacity. Whether paint or sculpture he creates his artwork leaving evidence of its formal construction. In stylized geometric forms Perron creates animals, people and landscapes with subtle simplicity. His choice of soft colors transports us to a universe of nostalgia and memory, to a time past, a preindustrial time when nature was undisturbed by machines. Through his artwork, Perron presents us with fragments of life that are directly related to our collective history. The body of his work resembles pictorial traces of our identity, a return to particular regional traditions and values that he displays with pride. Perron was inspired by the cultural representation of Northern Quebec as portrayed by Quebecois film maker and director Pierre Perrault. Caribou, geese, fishermen and hockey players populate Perron’s serene landscapes, as he showcases the beauty of his natural environment.

Currently resides in Charlevoix, Quebec.

Below is a video Jimmy made “as part of the Christmas festivities in the town of Baie St Paul, with the participation of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec, it is a work that highlights recurring subjects in [his] paintings, namely crossing rivers in an ice canoe and the legends of Charlevoix.”
