Spotlight On Lawren S. Harris

Harris took family vacations from 1922-1924 in the Temagami area, which is north of North Bay on Highway 11. It is likely he painted this piece during one of these holidays. The panel size dates this painting pre-1925 because Harris switched to using 12 x 15 in. boards in 1925. The written signature and title Temagami on the reverse are in Harris’ hand.

When Lawren and Bess Harris left Toronto in 1934, Lawren left behind work in the AGO storage, the Studio building, and on-loan with various institutions. The label and numbering “XXIV” are from the Doris Mills inventory done in 1936. Doris Mills was a fellow artist and friend who was asked to inventory all the work Harris left behind. The numbering “6/24” is for the Northern Sketches list of that inventory.
